Description

Please note: The following guest speaker events with Lindsay Brandon Hunter (originally planned for January 26) will now take place on March 16 and Whitney Laemmli (originally planned for February 2) will take place on February 15.

The BMO Lab team is happy to announce a lecture series running at the BMO Lab this academic year: “Performance Capture – on the margins of the computable.” These events, which run on Tuesdays or Thursdays from 5-7pm, will introduce major thinkers on themes of performance and digital culture to our community through lectures and extended, in-depth conversation (with refreshments!). This year, our speakers will focus on the tenuous compatibility and disjuncture between digital representation and the live body. Imanuel Schipper (25.10) will begin by surveying these anxieties in contemporary postdramatic theatre. Lindsay Brandon Hunter (16.3) will share her work on deepfakes and performance theory. Whitney Laemmli (15.2) will discuss Rudolf von Laban and the troubled history of motion capture. Finally, artist LaJuné McMillian (2.3) will introduce her efforts at the future of motion capture through her Black Movement Library project.

All talks will be held in-person at the new BMO Lab space at University College. Recordings may be made available later with attendees’ consent. Directions to the new space, and instructions for RSVPs, will come in a future email ahead of Dr. Schipper’s event.
