About us:

The Faculty of Arts & Science is the heart of Canada’s leading university and one of the most comprehensive and diverse academic divisions in the world. The strength of Arts & Science derives from our combined teaching and research excellence in the humanities, sciences and social sciences across 29 departments, seven colleges and 46 interdisciplinary centres, institutes and programs.

We can only realize our mission with the dedication and excellence of engaged staff and faculty. The diversity of opportunities and perspectives within the Faculty reflect the local and global landscape and the need for curiosity, innovative thinking and collaboration. At Arts & Science, we take pride in our legacy of innovation and discovery that has changed the way we think about the world.

The Centre for Drama, Theatre & Performance Studies is located in downtown Toronto, the perfect location to experience and participate in all kinds of performance. We hold high standards for the students in rich academic programs, both graduate and undergraduate. Our centre is in the process of moving into a newly designed facility in the Laidlaw Wing of University College. In addition to the Helen Gardiner Phelan Playhouse, we will be moving into newly designed theatre, studio and seminar spaces that will enrich the creative and intellectual exploration of our students and faculty, all supported by our technical and production staff. With a combination of seminar courses and practical streams, our centre emphasizes the integration of academic and practical work in our holistic pedagogical approach to classical through contemporary theatre and performance, and a range of emerging research paradigms in theatre and performance studies.

Your opportunity

The Research Assistant will help Dr. Eacho collect and organize historical publications surrounding the digitization of theatrical light and sound control. We will assemble a digital archive of trade publications, patent filings, interviews, textbooks, and any journalistic stories on a transition that participants compared to the electrification of theatres in its importance. This archive will be tagged and searchable. If local theatres and time allow, we may also explore local theatre archives for their own documentation around their transition to digital consoles. The RA may also join in related conversations at the BMO Lab about its own emerging technological infrastructure. This opportunity will enhance the RA’s skill development with archival work, database management, and interfacing with arts institutions.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Compilation of PDFs of publications and scan portions of books,
  • Collection and organization of data,
  • Communication with potential archival sources,
  • Coordination of translations as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree in theatre, dance, and/or performance studies OR working on a graduate degree in this area.
