Science fiction theatre has been emerging as an articulated practice – distinct from film and literature – in the past decade. Several theatre companies dedicated specifically to performing science fiction plays have taken over the stages from London (to Chicago to New York to Louisville) to San Francisco. However, this type of sci-fi theatre has rarely been addressed in academia. 2019: A Stage Odyssey aims to change this by examining theatre and performance not as a footnote to established sci-fi mediums, but as a particular way of engaging participants (performers and audiences) in an embodied experience.
Join us in Toronto as we explore the genre in the performance community and discuss the future of science fiction in theatre.
