Description

Three third-year PhD students at the CDTPS, Paula Danckert, Maria Meindl and Sanja Vodovnik, will present their research. The panel will be moderated by Professor Jill Carter.

In this colloquium, we shall investigate narratives of nationhood as expressed in three widely publicized events: The Chicago World’s Columbian Exhibition of 1893 (and the World’s Parliament of Religions, held in conjunction with the fair); Montreal’s Expo 67, and The Opera Louis Riel, re-mounted in 2017 to mark the 150th anniversary of Confederation. We shall explore questions of what these performances denote, how they are performed and documented, and how they contribute to the consolidation of narratives that connect certain individuals together as a nation, while excluding others.
