Hammer and Chisel
When and Where
Description
Hammer and Chisel is a play that follows two characters, Lefet and Rayet, as they are trying to understand the purpose of chipping their rocks. They question the system put in place which demands their labour and gives back little in return. We see familial expectation, confusion with rules and regulations, as well as differing opinions on the necessity of the rocks for the function of their society.
Inspired by personal conversations about politics, the play’s driving force is its political agenda. Although it is without doubt existential, this is a story that wants to agitate and manifest social change. Hammer and Chisel is about growing up, learning, working, resisting, and taking revolutionary action. This play was nominated for Playwrights Guild of Canada’s The Robert Beardsley Award in 2022. This production will be its world premiere.
