A Wretched Mourning: Decolonizing Dramaturgy
When and Where
Description
A Wretched Mourning tells the story of Josie Fanon on the day before she falls from the 5th floor of her apartment building. Throughout the play we encounter her in conversation with her doctor and with her younger self about her life and work with her husband Frantz Fanon, particularly recalling the events surrounding the writing of Wretched of the Earth, and his untimely death from leukemia. This play is both a passion-project for an esteemed specialist in the Psychology of the Global South and an impressive instance of Practice as Research.
On 01& 02 March 2024, the CDTPS will be presenting public readings of this play for those with an interest in Decolonial Frameworks, in the works of Dr. Frantz Fanon, or in new play development. Each reading will be followed by a short presentation by the Dramaturg, Assistant Dramaturg, and Playwright that speaks to the tools of re-worlding in arts-based research and a moderated talkback in which we hope you, as witnesses, will share observations and insights that will inform the playwright as he enters the third phase of the play’s development.
